Wi-Fi

As more consumers acquire, view and manage an increasingly wider variety of digital media content, they are demanding a user-friendly experience and the ability to access and enjoy such content from any electronic device, anywhere in the home. The introduction of wireless local area network (WLAN) technology based on IEEE 802.11 represented one step toward making this a reality. The introduction of DSP Group™'s XpandR™, a wireless multimedia system-on-a-chip (SoC) solution for wireless residential networking, represents yet another step in the process.

XpandR is a true "all-in-one" enabler. A wireless multimedia-enabled system-on-chip platform, XpandR incorporates powerful ARM and DSP cores, while supporting Wi-Fi and DECT, to enable streaming and sharing of pictures, video and music, email, web browsing, HD voice and other applications. By addressing several market demands, DSP Group's XpandR Wi-Fi solution is accelerating the embedding of WLAN technology within CE devices, and as a result, the proliferation of wireless networking.

Ease of use

Consumers are demanding easy-to-install residential wireless network systems. As such, XpandR supports the Wi-Fi Protected Setup protocol, ensuring that DSP Group's chipset family is Wi-Fi compliant and enables quick, easy, and secure WLAN networking.

Quality of service

With a vast quantity of rich multimedia content already available on WLAN networks, bandwidth availability assurance is required for certain applications such as video or music streaming and voice conversations. To ensure such quality of service, the XpandR is WMM-PS QoS certified.

Security

Protecting a WLAN-based network from intruders or bandwidth hijackers requires authentication of any device or application that has been authorized to access the network. Security support and authentication are critical for delivering a compelling user experience, and as such, the XpandR solution has passed WEP, WPA and WPA2 certification.

Coverage and range

Consumers are demanding unlimited home coverage, and expect the same range performance from connected Wi-Fi devices as from cordless handsets. By implementing maximum ration combining (MRC), the XpandR Wi-Fi solution provides better converge than a solution based on standard 802.11b/g technology.

High-definition voice and cordless/DECT-friendly

The XpandR chipset has received certification from the Wi-Fi CERTIFIED™ Voice-Personal program of the Wi-Fi Alliance. One of the first station devices worldwide initially announced as certified by the Wi-Fi Alliance program, the XpandR chipset underscores DSP Group's commitment to delivering wireless voice to the home. As the world's only SoC solution supporting Wi-Fi and DECT, the XpandR enables end-to-end voice over wireless (VoW) at a lower cost, better range and higher quality than alternative devices.

By bringing Wi-Fi networking to telephony, the XpandR platform enables telecom providers to offer a full range of multimedia services to consumers. And by bringing DECT telephony to Wi-Fi networking, the platform ensures that there is no compromising on voice quality.

Utilizing open Linux code for seamless software portability and application availability, the XpandR platform is ideal for infotainment centers and multimedia terminals, Wi-Fi/DECT video phones, fixed video phones with DECT handsets, and Wi-Fi video phones.
