Fixed-Mobile Convergence Solutions

Overview
Addressing the growing market demand for fixed-mobile convergence (FMC), DSP Group® offers products that leverage the Company's industry-leading cordless technologies with cutting-edge cellular communications technologies. Available as a service offering with two world-leading fixed and mobile operators, these products are being introduced to the residential market in order to bundle more services, improve home coverage, increase ARPU, and strengthen end-user loyalty.
 
Dual-mode, fixed-mobile handset: embedding a low-cost, cordless single chip in mobile handsets enables PSTN/IP connectivity at the home or office, thereby increasing indoor coverage, reducing churn, improving capacity, enhancing voice quality, reducing radiation, and extending battery life
Dual-mode, fixed-mobile base terminal: embedding a low-cost, cordless single chip in a fixed-wireless terminal with mobile backhaul enables mobile operators to take advantage of cordless technology for in-home voice communications and data services (e.g. SMS), and roll out bundled services for the home
 
Fixed-mobile, Bluetooth connectivity: Together with a partner, DSP Group provides an FMC solution utilizing Bluetooth connectivity. With this solution, a mobile phone is connected to a cordless DECT phone via Bluetooth, enabling voice calls through the mobile or fixed-line network, as well as caller ID, contact lists and SMS sharing between the mobile and cordless phone.

Dual-Mode, Fixed-Mobile Handset
The mobile handset integrates a cordless radio based on DECT (digital enhanced cordless telecommunications) at 1.7-1.9 GHz or Wi-Fi-friendly WDCT (worldwide digital cordless telecommunications) at 2.4 GHz. While the handset can be used as a regular mobile phone, when it is within range of an indoor cordless DECT or WDCT network either at the home or office, it can operate as a cordless handset for all communications purposes.
 
DSP Group supports dual-mode handsets by embedding its DCX/VegaOne cordless chip into a mobile handset. The chip monitors the air for the handset's base station, since it may be registered to more than one home/office base. Once a cordless base is detected, a connection is established, and the phone can accept and initiate calls over the cordless link to the PSTN or broadband IP network to which the home/office base station is connected.
 
DSP Group provides a hardware and software reference design enabling easy integration of cordless functionality into a mobile phone. The solution, together with DSP Group's support, enables customers to easily develop dual-mode handsets with fast time to market.
 
Dual-mode handsets based on DSP Group's chipset already have been developed by large consumer electronics (CE) brand manufacturers, and are in an advanced stage of deployment with a world-leading fixed-mobile converged operator.

Fixed-Mobile Convergence with Bluetooth Connectivity
For users at home, Bluetooth enables connectivity of the home/office phone to the mobile phone for:
  • Voice calls: incoming cellular calls are diverted to the cordless handset, while outgoing cellular calls are initiated from the cordless handset
  • Caller ID: mobile caller ID is displayed on the cordless handset
  • Data sharing: synchronized contact lists, call logs and even SMS sharing between the mobile and cordless phone
 

When Bluetooth is implemented, the user does not have to carry a mobile phone around the home, but can simply leave it next to the base station and more conveniently use a cordless handset.

 
DSP Group's solution is based on a third-party Bluetooth transceiver controlled by the Company's cordless chip (DCX/VegaOne) that is used in the cordless base station (fixed part). The Blutetooth stack, which can run on the embedded ARM of the cordless chip, is combined with a firmware solution provided by DSP Group's partner to cost-effectively provide numerous features. These include incoming/outgoing voice call routing, synchronization, and data transfer between Bluetooth-enabled mobile devices (up to four can be registered to the same cordless base station) and cordless devices (a multi-handset system with up to 12 registered devices). As such, the DSP Group solution provides the industry's best compatibility and interoperability with leading Bluetooth-enabled
mobile phone manufacturers and brands.

Dual-Mode, Fixed-Mobile Base Terminal
The dual-mode, fixed-mobile base terminal is a wireless terminal/gateway featuring cordless connectivity to DECT/WDCT handsets at the home enabling mobile operators to provide home telephony services routed through their cellular infrastructure. World-leading mobile operators are already implementing this product type based on DSP Group's cordless chipset solutions.

DSP Group's chipset and reference software are also used for myriad complementary cordless devices available in the market, including an array of handsets and multimedia terminals combining cordless (DECT) and Wi-Fi technologies.
